Amalfi Coast excursions for cruise passengers turn on a single number: how many hours sit between the gangway and all-aboard. The numbers behind a Salerno call
Salerno: Molo Manfredi takes the ships alongside, Molo Masuccio the coastal ferries.
Molo Manfredi, with its Zaha Hadid maritime terminal, has been extended by 127 metres to 480 so that it can handle two ships at once. The Alicost, Alilauro and NLG hydrofoils also leave from here: the Capri service departs at 07:50 and comes back at 16:25.
The Travelmar coastal ferries, by contrast, leave from Molo Masuccio in Piazza della Concordia, about two kilometres further east and three hundred metres from the railway station. First sailing to Amalfi is 08:40. The cruise terminal is 1.5–2 km from the centre: you can walk along the seafront, take town buses 5 and 6, or take a taxi. We found no documented free shuttle laid on for cruise calls.

The three days that work
Amalfi: five minutes on foot from Molo Pennello to the cathedral steps.
Day A — Amalfi, unhurried. The 08:40 ferry from Molo Masuccio, arriving in Amalfi around 09:15. The cathedral, the Paper Museum, lunch, and possibly the two-hour boat trip out to the Fiordo di Furore. Come back on an early-afternoon sailing and you are in port by 16:30. This is the most balanced day, and it leaves room for something to go wrong.
Day B — the boat tour. Six hours on the water from Salerno, with the return time fixed by the operator. You do not choose the stops, but you see the coast from the sea, which is the point of view this place exists for. Alternatively, if you go ashore at Maiori there is the four-hour trip with drinks and a swim at €135 per person, while from Amalfi the caves and snorkelling tour costs €86.
Day C — Positano, long calls only. Seventy minutes each way means two hours twenty of sailing. With an 18:00 departure that leaves a little over five hours ashore: enough for the beach, lunch and the steps, and nothing else. With a 19:00 departure the day becomes comfortable.
The return times are the critical part
Positano: a single jetty in front of Spiaggia Grande, and in high season the boarding queue is long.
The last Travelmar sailing from Amalfi to Salerno is around 18:00 — far too late for a ship leaving at the same hour. What you need is an afternoon sailing. Exact times change with the season and have to be read off the timetable board on the day.
Three habits that save the day:
- Photograph the timetable posted at the jetty the moment you arrive, rather than trusting the one printed at your hotel.
- Join the boarding queue twenty minutes early: Positano has only one jetty and in August the queue is long.
- Keep the number of the ship's port agent in your pocket, not just the tour operator's.
When the sea gets up, the ferries are suspended and the operator owes you nothing beyond the price of the ticket. You then go back by road, and that is exactly why an hour of margin is not fussiness.
If you dock at Naples

On a call of under ten hours, then, the Amalfi Coast from Naples is a gamble: Capri, Sorrento or the city itself are better bets. How to spend less
- Use the scheduled ferries instead of an excursion: Salerno–Amalfi is €12 against €149 for a six-hour boat tour.
- Book the Travelmar ticket online, with free cancellation until 24:00 two days before.
- Choose Maiori or Minori over Positano: €10 each way, fewer people and the same coastline.
