What Viator is
Viator was founded in 1995, before the acronym OTA existed, and was bought by TripAdvisor in 2014 for around USD 200 million. It is now the group's Experiences segment: the same inventory is sold both on viator.com and inside tripadvisor.com. Operations sit in San Francisco, the parent company in Needham, Massachusetts.
Scale is its main weapon: between 300,000 and 400,000 bookable experiences across more than 2,500 destinations. The marketplace rule applies here too. Viator owns no boats. The person meeting you on the pier at Amalfi or Praiano is one of the local operators listed in our operator directory.
How booking works
You search, pick a date and an option, and pay by card, PayPal or the usual methods in your chosen currency; prices include taxes and refunds are returned in the currency of the booking. One feature that genuinely helps on this coast is the in-platform chat with the operator: it lets you agree the exact landing stage and meeting time without swapping phone numbers.
On Viator the Amalfi Coast is one category, but departures are scattered between Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, Minori and Maiori, and the transfer difference can be an hour.
Cancellation, pay later and the price guarantee
The "standard" policy is the common one: full refund if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start, nothing inside that window. But listings also carry moderate, strict or entirely non-refundable terms, and the difference does not jump out at you: it is written on the listing and you have to look for it.
Reserve now, pay later is the most generous of the four: you can hold a date up to four months ahead, the card is charged two days before the activity, and until then you can cancel with no outlay. For a group still arguing about dates for a July week on the coast, that is a real feature.
The Lowest Price Guarantee is the only explicit price commitment among the four platforms: same tour, same operator, same currency found cheaper elsewhere and Viator refunds the difference, provided the original booking was made with them. Sources put the claim window at up to 48 hours after the activity begins, though one source instead describes three days from booking.
Prices: what we cannot tell you
Viator's category and product pages were not machine-readable, so we quote no prices, because any figure here would be invented. We do know which products are indexed for this coast — small-group full days from Positano with swimming and snorkelling, day trips from Amalfi on a wooden gozzo, boat tours with snorkelling and drinks on board, private half and full days from Praiano, and private charters with a choice of wooden boat, speedboat, luxury speedboat or yacht leaving from Positano, Praiano, Amalfi, Minori or Maiori — but not the numbers.
So the comparison has to be done by hand: open the same trip on both platforms on the same day, with the same date and party size. It is the only serious method, because the price moves with the season and with the option you select.
Many listings combine a ferry leg with the boat trip: check whether the transfer is included or paid locally.
App, support and reviews
The "Viator Tours & Attractions" app exists for iOS and Android; third-party statistics read credit it with 4.88 out of 5 from roughly 76,000 Google Play ratings and about 6.1 million downloads. Support runs through a help centre, phone and chat, with round-the-clock availability described by reviewers.
The review system is closed to verified buyers, and those ratings also flow into Tripadvisor along with traveller photos. On Trustpilot, Viator sits at 4.5 out of 5 from 332,107 reviews, 74% five star and 11% one star, read. Watch one detail: a separate profile exists for the viator.co domain with a far lower score, and it is not the official site.
Positive reviews return to the same themes: choice, easy navigation, knowledgeable guides, free 24-hour cancellation and quick refunds. Negative ones concentrate on refunds too, from the other side: slow or denied in disputed cases, with waits of up to two months reported, operators who fail to appear or keep people waiting, tour times changed and a different cancellation policy then applied, and occasional gaps between the description and what you find at the pier.
Currency and booking direct
You pay in the currency selected at checkout and refunds come back in that same currency, which protects you from exchange surprises but also means a euro card used against a dollar price still goes through your bank's conversion. On booking direct, the category-wide rule applies: the commission is paid by the operator and the listed price is normally the operator's own, but few owners on this coast publish a verifiable rate card.
Who it suits, and the alternatives
Viator suits the traveller who wants to see everything before choosing, who books months ahead, and who already lives inside the Tripadvisor ecosystem. It suits you less if a fast, certain refund when things go wrong is your first priority.
